Do you know any farmers in Saskatchewan who would like to learn safe practices for handling raw milk and legal requirements for setting up a raw dairy herd share? Michael Schmidt and Cow Share Canada (Ontario) would like to bring their “Cow Share College” to Saskatchewan for a weekend workshop, and they are currently assessing level of interest in our province. For more information, contact Ann Hagedorn at Cow Share Canada, email: <cowsharecanada@gmail.com> or phone (519) 369-1681.

Milk War – A documentary about food rights November 10, 2011
You are invited to a screening of a documentary film about Ontario dairy farmer Michael Schmidt. It is called “Milk War” and it chronicles some of the events surrounding the raiding of his dairy farm and his charges for the illegal sale of unpasteurized milk.
when: Thursday, November 10, 2011
where: University of Regina, RIC 19 (Research and Innovation Center building)
time: 7pm
admission free
Co-sponsored by the University of Regina Cinema Politica film series, organized by the Regina Public Interest Research Group
Here is some information about the film:
“On a November morning in 2006, 20 armed officers raided a small farm two hours north of Toronto. They weren’t looking for drugs or guns. They were there for the milk. Organic / biodynamic dairy farmer Michael Schmidt found himself facing multiple charges for selling unpasteurized milk, a practice outlawed in Canada. “Milk War” tells the story of Schmidt’s battle with government authorities over raw milk – a fight that Schmidt insists is really about fundamental rights.
“Michael Schmidt’s opposition to the raw milk ban put him on a collision course with the Ontario government that continues to this day, and set off a public debate that touched upon a whole host of issues: the immense power of Canada’s $12-billion dairy industry and the challenges facing small, independent farmers; the increasingly controversial nature of large-scale factory farming methods; and a growing public unease about the way most of our food products are processed before they reach us. At the heart of this debate is a question of basic freedoms: should government have the right to decide what we, and our families, are allowed to eat?”
Please feel free to invite anyone you think would be interested in seeing this film.

Help us to make real milk available in Saskatchewan
Around 60 citizens from Saskatchewan attended a meeting with dairy farmer Michael Schmidt on December 5, 2010 to listen to issues surrounding the politics of raw milk availability. Thanks to everyone who helped to support this event. You can help by letting the voices of Saskatchewan residents be heard!
Please print and sign our petition to the Saskatchewan government, asking that standards for safe raw milk production be put in place and that raw milk be legally available in our province. Ask your friends, families and co-workers to sign it. When the petition sheet is full of signatures, please mail it to the address printed on the bottom.
Or, you can use this online petition. Thanks for your efforts in ensuring our freedom to eat and drink whatever we choose. When the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments realize how big the consumer demand for raw dairy really is, they will need to work with small dairy farmers and with Cow Share Canada to establish standards of production to make raw dairy available to all who want it.
